Dinner Show
Invariably I end up people watching whenever I eat out alone.
(which I do too much of....both the eating out and the other, but both are separate topics)
Due to the traveller's that abound in this place I'm exposed to various cultural idiosyncracies which otherwise I wouldn't see in Portland.
Tonight's show was an older chap who I claim in my mind to be German. German, mostly due to the efficiency of his ordering process even though his english wasn't good and the accent. Not due to the words, because I don't speak German...coulda been Japanese, but the tone didn't sound like that language.
Anyhow I've noticed that both peoples from Europe and from Asia seem to raise their hands at a restaurant to get the waiter's attention. Kinda like being back in gradeschool again.....pick me, pick me, I know the answer......
Is this done in other parts of the country? I was thinking about it; my well honed Portland laid back quiet instinct is to gain a server's attention usually by a look somewhere between "Hey what's up" and the evil eye. Thinking.....processing.....never seen a raised hand in Portland (of course me being the fine cuisine-n-ator I am should know....hah). Maybe it does happen, but I never eaten out enough to notice? May its just me in my own odd world way?
Don't know, chime in...........

I'm the 'eye-brow-lift' guy... Then again, I try to eat at places where the help is paid enough (or there are so few people eating there) that taking care of me is job number 1.
Or places that wrap your food in tinfoil and expect you to leave.
the eye brow lift technique is common the world over, i believe, but other cultures often combine it with the hand raise, shout, whistle, or hiss.
I've yet to witness the shout, whistle, or hiss in a restaurant....but then again I'm just a bloody American...and a backwoods West Coasterner to boot.....
Usually, servers are a bit overly eager...only in CR did I find myself addressing the servers.
