A Brief Lexicon

Words and Phrases I've come across after six months here.

Hoale - lit. foreigner. Generally used in reference to white people, derogatory.
Hale - lit. house/dwelling
Kama Aina - lit. family? of the land. Used to refer to a local.
Makai - lit. Ocean/Sea. As the Hawaiian's have a tendency not to refer to North/South/East/West this is a direction.....toward the ocean.
Mauka - lit. hills/mountains. Same but toward the mountains.
Kamehameha, Kapiolani, Kalakaua....all important past leaders/figures.
Shoyu Bunny - A Japanese Lady.
Sista/Brodda....reference usually to friends.

Alright enough words. Haircut turned out fine even though I'm not entirely sure the lady cutting my hair had ever cut hoale hair before (into something that's not a butch/short cut...Tom Peterson's haircut).

Today went and laid on the beach (for a little too long.....gonna be sore tommorrow) which was good.....haven't left town in months. I even remembered to call home for Mom's Day.

Looking foward to my folks coming to visit. We're gonna take a weekend trip to The Big Island (aka Hawaii). Should be fun.

Random side note. If you ever ask almost anyone I lived in the dorms with in college for a mailing address; the immediate response is OK here's the address, but No Fingerhut. Fingerhut is one of the worst mailing catalogs. Not sure who started the whole signing other people up to receive this monstrosity, but it seems to have scarred people for life........makes me laugh in remembrance.

I'll end with some Portland news. Apparently ants have gotten into some Brown Sugar/Powdered Sugar I left in a cupboard.....but on the flip side, here's a couple photos dad took of the yard.....considering this is my house; if the plants survive the summer it will be a miracle.....
