Sunday in the Gaming Zone
I've never been in one of these gaming zone places before for internet access.
There are aboot 100 something computers in here....most everyone is playing some sort of game. Unbelieveable, but better than sitting in a dark room by yourself playing games.
Not too much new to report.
The symphony Friday was great. They had a reader board above the stage which translated the words as they were being sung. I have a new respect for Berlioz' "The Damnation of Faust."
Saturday, got pissed and watched the game. Note it was not the Grand Final, but rather the AFL Premiership. (It is slightly confusing that Australia starts with A....AFL could be American Football League.....ABC could be American Broadcasting Corporation). Too bad won't be around for the Country of Origin Match where the Cockroaches play the Canetoads (the Aussie's, great sense of humour).
Today I went to Toronga Zoo. Lots of remodelling, but very cool (and IMHO expensive). Still amused that the Gorilla and Orungutan exhibits were "The McDonald's Gorilla Forest and The McDonald's Orangu-tan Forest. The Chimpanzee exhibit was by Coca-Cola Ar(hmmm....cough)tel). Besides getting to see all the unique Australian animals, I've never been so close to a Lion, Tiger, or Rhino. As soon as the Elephants clear their quarantine period, they will have an excellent new display.
Random bits of this place:
Burger King (or something that looks suspiciously like Burger King) is Hungry Jack's.
McDonald's is here and appears popular.
Even though there are a plethora of Cafes and Bistros here; there is still Starbuck's....which also appears popular.
Beers come in two sizes. The smaller one (who's name I haven't learnt yet) and is like 8-10 ounces and the larger one called a "Schooner" and is 15 ounces.
Coffee is served in a normal coffee cup with a saucer....rather than the over large coffee mug.
When you get a Coke (which seems to be the popular soft drink here) it comes in a 390mL bottle (rather than the 600mL larger one back in the states).
People wear suits and in general seem to dress with more "class" than back home.
Bars are open places rather than dark stinky holes.
The train, bus and ferry systems are excellent and even without those, the city is very walkable (my feet currently worn out from walking).
The open spaces in the city are numerous (and surpass the American cities in my knowledge base for open space per capita area).
Popular lunch time fare is meat pie. I think I rather like meat pie over a sandwich.
I still haven't figured out what the eating schedule is here....
In Chinatown they serve something called Yum Cha (which is like brunch)....gonna have to try yum cha before I leave.
Off to leave the gamers to their peace and destruction.......
