Musings from the Mundane

Why not write and pass on this simple mundane life?

Across the Seas Again

Tuesday I fly back to Portland for a week.

I am both very excited and a little daunted at the same time.

I fly back for my brothers high school graduation and one of my sisters college masters degree graduation (apparently to teach elementary school in Oregon you need a masters degree).

I head back to a house that hasn't seen its owner since January. I go back to my Volvo and a stereo that has been sorely missed. I will once again be able to enjoy the movie experience in the comforts of home.

I look foward to doing some housework when I'm home. Dad has been telling me there's a leaky faucet at the house, that'll be fixed before I fly back to the islands. I imagine that sounds a little odd looking forward to housework, but part of the reason for buying an older house is to fix things.

I just realized the first night I'm back will be pub night. I hope I'll be awake enough to go down and see if there is anyone still working there that might remember me. Also, Sunday night down at the Laurelhurst for a beer, pizza, and a movie sounds really really good.

I'm a little daunted in going back to a place where everything is faster (even speech) and my entire perspective of a long distance is out of whack (somehow 20 miles seems like a very long way to go). Rice will not be served with every meal. I haven't sat on a plane for a 6 hour flight in awhile. Due to lack of knowledge, there will likely be no wi-fi access. I go back to an office I've never been to, with faces I've never met, and with (in classic Hawaiian style) makeshift provisions to do work.

There is some sort of loud hooting, hollering, honking horns, Waikiki trolley bells coming from down on Ala Moana, wonder what's going on....... it must be summer season I guess, fireworks 3 times last night and fireworks tonight too.....

Portland seems very quaint, from looking at the brewpub and Laurelhurst movie theatre. If you think everything is faster in Portland, you should check out LA!

I've been to LA numerous times and compared to LA; Portland is a Hobbiton.

Never thought of it; maybe quaint describes me? I enjoy both places even though they do not do justice to describe Portland fully.

As any good Oregonian can, I could go on for hours about the place; but I won't.....one of the things we say about Californians up there is; if they survive one gray winter.....they'll probably stay...

Portland is "fast paced"? That one made me laugh on the inside.

And, just so you know, Dern can be as quaint as a forklift busting through a Hurricane fence.

I did do that.....

(and having just got in this afternoon....Portland is faster paced than Honululu, but its just the right pace me's starting to think..I'm always saying SF is too fast for me...)
