Weekend Trek
Finally a Hike.
After many months here, I finally went to Manoa Falls with my friends from the mainland.
They brought a book of trails on the island. Unfortunately I've been spoiled by "The Red Bible" (aka Sullivan's 100 hikes in Oregon series red book....100 hikes/book). I've almost come to expect the same quality/quantity of trails wherever I go. Apparently, an island is surrounded by water and most people spend more time dealing with water than with the land.
We also went to Punchbowl Crater (the National Cemetery of the Pacific). I recognize the statue from Hawaii Five-O. Great views of the city from Punchbowl and also in the Honolulu Memorial (the statue) along the wings they have detailed tile maps of the WWII Pacific campaign and some of Korea. We never seem to learn much about the little pockets of land people fought and died fighting over in school.
The places you end up mostly hearing about are The Battle of Midway, Iwo Jima, and dropping the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima. Never think much about there being battles in New Guinea, China, the Aleutians and Okinawa itself.
There's my history lesson for the day.......

I'm going hiking tomorrow!! :)
Sweet! Where('d) you go?
I imagine there are a lot of worthwhile trails in South Cali.
Oh, "The Red Bible"! I still read it as if I were still a resident of Northwest Oregon. I was Catholic most of my life, yet I've read more "Gospel according to Sullivan" than my cummulative time reading Matthew, Luke, or John. We really like hiking don't we, Dern -- more than the Holy Spirit itself.
Humph! Same dif.
I probably should have shipped out here with that book....or the Blue, Green, Purple, or Yellow Books (none of which is nearly as worn as the Red Book).
Yep, just like the American Transcendentalists (Emerson, Thoreau, Muir).
Hiking in LA = Topanga Canyon area.
